Malaysia Rugby mull Asia Rugby Grand League participation

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rugby (MR) have yet to decide whether Malaysia will compete in the new Asia Rugby Grand League (ARGL) which begins May next year.

Malaysia is one of four nations that have been invited to compete in the inaugural season of ARGL. The tournament's objective is to further grow the 15s format game in Asia.

The three other nations are Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea.

MR vice president Fahmy Jalil said there are a number of factors to consider before they can commit to the competition.

"It (ARGL) is a professional league which will provide high intensity matches and countries can have marquee players from top rugby nations playing for them," said Fahmy, when contacted yesterday.

"We, however, has yet to confirm our participation in the league as there are a few things we need to sort out first.

"One of the issues is money as it will cost more than a million (RM) to prepare a solid team for the ARGL. ARGL allows teams to hire foreign players which is costly, especially those from New Zealand, Australia or other nations (with similar standards).

"We also need to look for sponsors and this will take time. We are not sure whether Asia Rugby (AR) will give us any subsidy for ARGL.

"We also don't have our own rugby field or stadium to organise the event (for home games)."

Fahmy disclosed that the competition will be limited to four teams next year but will be gradually increased each season.

It is expected to increase to 12 teams by 2027.
