Khiew smashes meet record ahead of Sea Games

KUALA LUMPUR: It has been all work and no play for national swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean, but there's nothing dull about his form.

The 20-year-old underlined his credentials as a gold medal prospect for the Sea Games next month by bettering a meet record at the Malaysia Invitational age group championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil today.

Hoe Yean started the day with a new record in the men's 400m freestyle after clocking 3:52.28 to erase Welson Sim's mark of 3:53.47. Indonesia's Nicholas Karel Subagyo was second with 3:59.58 and Chong Zheng Yen picked up the bronze medal with 4:33.57.

Hoe Yean clocked 2:06.51 in the men's 200m individual medley final for the gold, Indonesia's Armandio Tangkas was second with 2:08.50 and his compatriot, Nicholas Karel Subagyo, took the bronze (2:09.77).

Hoe Yean, who is an UCSI university computer science student, won't be competing this weekend due to exams.

"I have been competing since the age of seven... there's not much time for me to play but it's not an issue for me."

On his Sea Games preparations, Hoe Yean said: "I'm mentally focused and physically fit for the Sea Games.

"It was a pleasant surprise to break the meet record. I want to go to Cambodia and do my best," said Hoe Yean who won the 200m freestyle gold at the Hanoi Sea Games last year.
