Asian Games target will be announced soon

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has asked for more time to decide and announce the target for the Hangzhou Asian Games from Sept 23-Oct 8.

This is in response to the completion of several world championships in sports such as cycling, athletics, diving, and badminton.

Hannah said Chef de Mission (CDM) Datuk Chong Kim Fatt will announce the target when everything is ready.

It is because some of the national badminton players who competed at the recent world meet in Copenhagen, Denmark, only returned to Malaysia on Tuesday.

"I will be having more meetings with the CDM. We are already at the tail end of our preparations for the Asian Games," said Hannah on Tuesday.

"Our badminton players, however, only returned today (Tuesday), so just give us a bit more time.

"When everything is ready, the CDM will announce the finer details."

Malaysia's best haul at the Asian Games was 13 years ago in Guangzhou when the contingent won nine gold, 18 silver and 14 bronze medals.

In Indonesia five years ago, Malaysia settled for seven gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze.

At this year's delayed edition, the Malaysian contingent is made up of 292 athletes and will compete in 29 disciplines from 23 sports.
