Asian Games: Bunga Raya 7s reach quarter-finals

HANGZHOU: The national sevens rugby squad qualified for the knockout stage of the Asian Games after finishing second in Group A.

The Bunga Raya 7s only needed a win, and they booked their place in the Asiad last eight after defeating the Philippines 24-7.

In the second group match, they were soundly beaten 40-7 by heavyweights Hong Kong.

Earlier, Malaysia had to play catch up when they allowed the Philippines to take a 7-0 lead, following a Nicholas Robertson try and a conversion by Luc Smith.

However, Malaysia levelled the score through a Shah Izwan Nordin try and an Azwan Zuwairi conversion.

It was all Malaysia in the second half.

But it was a different ball game in the match against Hong Kong, as Malaysia were left trailing 21-0 in the first half.

There wasn't much change in the second, as Malaysia only got one try and a conversion through Azwan.

In the quarter-finals, Malaysia will play another powerhouse, South Korea, who topped Group B.

Meanwhile in artistic gymnastics, newcomer Sharul Aimy Kamaru Hisam achieved his target by reaching the vault final.

In the qualifying rounds, Sharul amassed 14.216 points to finish sixth out of 16 gymnasts.

Malaysia will also be fighting for a final spot in eSports' Arena of Valor after reaching the semi-finals.

Malaysia's Nicholas Ng, Yong Zhang Quan, Lai Chai Chein, Ong Jun Yang, Eng Jun How and Chong Han Hui defeated Hong Kong 2-0 and will face Vietnam in the last four on Monday.
