A proud day for Malaysia at the Asian Games

KUALA LUMPUR: The Jalur Gemilang was raised three times today during the Asian Games prize-giving in Hangzhou.

There was gold, silver and bronze as Malaysian athletes from karate, sepak takraw and badminton stood on the podium.

The most rousing occasion was provided by karateka Arif Afifuddin who won a surprise gold.

Despite fighting with a swollen eye, Arif overcame Kazakhstan's Daniyar Yuldashev in the men's kumite under-84kg final.

Malaysia settled for a silver medal in sepak takraw when Amirul Zazwan, Azlan Alias, Syahir Rosdi, Khairol Zaman Hamir Akhbar and Zarif Marican lost to Thailand in the regu final.

In badminton, although Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik lost in the men's doubles semi-finals last night, they stood on the podium today to receive their bronze medal.

A day before the curtain comes down on the Asian Games tomorrow, Malaysia have won six gold, eight silver and 18 bronze.

Malaysia have collected a total of 32 medals, thus surpassing their 27-medal target.
