SAM: Unfair for Pandelela to blame media for 'entity' issue without seeking clarification

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM) is disappointed with national diver Pandelela Rinong for blaming the media for the recent 'entity' issue following the national squad's dismal performance at the Doha World Aquatics Championships last week.

SAM president Norismadi Abd Manap said it was unfair for Pandelela to say on social media that the media had twisted the statement she gave upon returning from Doha without seeking an explanation from the relevant parties first.

He stressed that the sports media maintains professional standards of reporting in all formats - print, electronic or online.

"Reports were done based on statements given and all sessions were recorded as a reference for the (report) writings. Thus it is not fair to point fingers at the media recklessly," said Norismadi in a statement released by SAM today.

"The media has never denied the contributions made by Datuk Pandelela, however, to blame the media is not right.

"The use of social media as a platform to express views or disappointment (on the issue) without discussing or obtaining an explanation from the media involved or SAM does not reflect your (status) as an professional athlete."

Diver Pandelela Rinong had on Monday, upon returning from Doha, told the media that "something happened" which had affected the national team, though she did not delve into details.

This sparked speculation as to what 'entity' she was referring to.

Pandelela had on social media today said: "These issues are related to training. However, these issues have been translated into terms like 'entity' and 'third party', which is very misleading to the public."

The national squad, comprising 13 divers, had a disappointing outing at the Doha World Aquatics Championships which doubled up as an Olympic qualifier.

No Malaysian diver secured qualification to the Paris Olympics at the event.
