Hazriq hopes to jump over the next hurdle after SPM

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite his busy schedule with studies, hurdler Hazriq Che Mat Kilau has set his sights on qualifying for the Under-20 Asian Athletics Championships in Dubai on April 24-27.

The Form Five student of Tun Hussein Onn Sports School in Kluang is sitting for his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, which end on Feb 29.

He hopes to beat the qualifying mark of 14.30s in the boys' 100m hurdles (height of hurdles — 99cm) at the Federal Territory All Comers Championships in Bukit Jalil on March 2-3 to qualify for the Asian meet.

Hazriq disclosed that he only trains an hour daily due to his SPM examinations.

"My exams end on Thursday, and I will head to KL the next day for the FT All Comers.

"Despite the lack of training, I believe I can achieve the qualifying mark for the Asian meet," said Hazriq.

Hazriq holds the Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) record of 13.46 (height of hurdles — 91cm) set in Negri Sembilan last year.

The Asian meet serves as a qualifying event for the Under-20 World Championships in Lima, Peru, on Aug 26-31.

The 100m hurdles qualifying time for the world meet is 14.20s.
