No revenge for Yasshmita in Hamburg

KUALA LUMPUR: Yasshmita Jadish Kumar's hope of seeking revenge against Egypt's seventh seed Malak Khafagy did not materialise in the inaugural German Open in Hamburg yesterday.

The Malaysian, ranked 74th in the world, who lost to Malak in the Tuanku Muhriz Trophy quarter-finals in Seremban in 2022, went down 13-15, 7-11, 5-11 in 26 minutes in a second round match.

World No. 38 Malak will face world No. 4 and top seed Nele Gilis of Belgium in the quarter-finals.

Coach John Welton said though Yasshmita lost the match, she really worked hard this season.

"She has embraced the physical side of the game and she is working really well in the gym with our coaches.

"There is so much more to come from her and I'm proud to be on the journey with her.

"She needs another couple of weeks of training and to play in Ireland," said Welton.

With Yasshmita's defeat, the Malaysian women's challenge in Hamburg is over.

In the men's competition, world No. 22 and fourth seed Ng Eain Yow will face India's Velavan Senthilkumar in the quarter-finals.

Velavan upset eighth seed George Parker of England 11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9 in the second round.
