Shereen, Azeem, aim to be on song at Tom Jones meet

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian Games bronze medallist Shereen Samson Vallabouy's target in the two-day Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Florida, United States is to break her national 400m record of 51.80s.

The Perakian will run in the 200m tomorrow (April 12) and 400m on Saturday (April 13).

Shereen's American coach, Derrick White believes that she has the ability to run under 51.80.

"Her confidence level for the (Tom Jones) meet is good," said White.

The 25-year-old needs to run 50.95 (before the end of June) to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

In her first 400m race this year, the Florida Relays Athletics meet last month, Shereen posted 52.29 and finished third.

It was her career fourth fastest time in the quarter-mile event, and faster than her Sea Games gold medal winning time of 52.53 and Hangzhou Asian Games bronze medal time of 52.58.

Meanwhile, 100m runner Azeem Fahmi also hopes to qualify for the Olympics through the Tom Jones meet.

The Asian Games bronze medallist, who is studying at Auburn State University, holds the national record of 10.09. He needs to clock 10 seconds to qualify for Paris.

If Azeem fails to do so, he can still qualify for the Olympics by being ranked in the world's top 48. He holds the national record of 10.09 set at the World Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia, in 2022.

In his first 100m race this season, the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta on March 16, he posted 10.38 to finish third. Azeem won the bronze in Hangzhou Asian Games by clocking 10.11.

National Pelapis coach Amir Izwan, who previously trained Azeem, said he is ready for a good run in the Tom Jones meet.
