A difficult search for a new partner for Dhabitah

KUALA LUMPUR: The national diving team have another "leak to plug" following the retirement of Wendy Ng.

Wendy announced her retirement recently after 14 years of diving, winning honours in the Sea Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Olympics.

With Wendy out of the picture, the question now is who will partner Nur Dhabitah Sabri in the 3m springboard synchro for international competitions?

Malaysian Swimming (MAS) technical director Bryan Nickson Lomas admitted that it is difficult to find a replacement in the mould of Wendy.

"We don't have anyone good enough to pair up with Dhabitah for now," said Bryan.

"Wendy and Dhabitah have the experience for a high degree of difficulty (DD) which none of the back-up divers can come close at the moment.

"At Sea Games-level, simple DD is sufficient but not for the major Games."

Kimberly Bong and Ong Ker Ying are next down the pecking order behind Dhabitah and Wendy, but the duo have been competing on a lower DD.

Bryan said the national diving team need much rebuilding, and Chinese coaches Mao Lin and Li Junsong have been recruited for the purpose.

"With the two new Chinese coaches starting soon, we will use the next two years to build up the national team again," said Bryan.
