Aira achieves career-high ranking ahead of World Championships

KUALA LUMPUR: Squash player Aira Azman received a boost ahead of the World Championships by achieving a career-high ranking of No. 39 in the women's PSA Tour rankings.

She improved five spots following her victories over world No. 30 Hana Ramadan of Egypt and No. 32 Georgia Adderley of Scotland at the El Gouna Open in Egypt last week.

The 19-year-old is currently in Kuala Lumpur to prepare for her second world meet outing in Cairo on May 9-18.

"I am definitely happy with my progress. However, I am not satisfied yet. My goal is to break into the top 30 by December," said Aira, who turned professional in 2020.

"It will be challenging, but I am ready to fight and achieve my target."

At the World Championships, Aira will open her campaign against Spain's world No. 60 Marta Dominguez.

National coach Ajaz Azmat hopes Aira will make more inroads in tournaments.

"She is working hard to strengthen several elements of her game to become a stronger player," said Ajaz.

Aira's sister Aifa, 22, climbed to No. 32, while S. Sivasangari dropped two spots to No. 13.

In the men's rankings, Ng Eain Yow maintained at No. 18, while Addeen Idrakie climbed up two spots to No. 65.
