NAYPYIDAW: Myanmar estimates about 1,000 megawatt (MW) of power will be generated by the middle of next year to add to the country’s capacity.
President U Win Myint said this when announcing the 50 per cent nationwide electrification mark last Friday, according to The Myanmar Times.
Since coming to power in 2016, the National League for Democracy government has pushed the electrification rate from 34 per cent to where it stands to date.
Win Myint said reforms undertaken by the Electricity and Energy Ministry by focusing on increasing electricity generation through hydropower, natural gas, and solar power had paid off.
The halfway mark reached meant linking 16,000 villages and some 350 towns to the national grid, he added.
The ministry said the government had invested 2.3 billion kyat in the electricity sector since 2016.
