Filipino graphic designer wins Asean Logo Design Competition

A graphic artist from Batangas, near Manila, the Philippines took the top spot in the recent Asean Youth's 2020 Year of Asean Logo Design Competition.

According to the Manila Times, Joemari Manguiat, from Lipa City, said his design was inspired by a blooming flower which represents unity and prosperity among Asean members.

He received his award at a ceremony held at the Asean secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia recently.

He said the 10 red petals of the flower represent Asean states whose flags feature the colour red – Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Singapore and Vietnam.

The blue petals symbolise the flags of the remaining states – Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines; while the smatter of yellow symbolises prosperity and purity.

Second place went to Swumm Htet Naing from Myanmar, whose design was a bouquet of flowers; while Mohammad Firdaus from Malaysia took third with a diamond-shaped design.

2020 has been designated as the Year of Asean Identity to further develop and foster a sense of belonging and shared identity among the peoples of Southeast Asia.

The logo will be featured in various Asean materials and high-profile events throughout 2020.

The event by the Asean-German Cooperation, the brainchild of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (German Corporation for International Cooperation), was announced in September last year and drew 1,378 submissions from all Asean states.
