Cambodian King leaves for China for medical check-up

KING Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk left Cambodia on Wednesday for their routine medical check-up in China.

According to the Khmer Times, the King and Queen Mother were seen off at the Phnom Penh International Airport by Prime Minister, Hun Sen and Senate president Say Chhum.

Others who were present at the airport include National Assembly president Heng Samrin and other senior government and legislative body officials as well as members of the royal families and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, Wang Wentian.

The King wrote a letter on Monday, saying in his absence Chhum will be acting Head of State.

The King and Queen Mother's last visit to China was in April.

Hun Sen and Samrin wrote on their Facebook pages, wishing the King strength, wisdom, good health and long life.

Oum Daravuth, an adviser to the Queen Mother's secretariat, told Khmer Times on Wednesday that the King's departure to China is a routine appointment with a Chinese doctor every six months.

"The King could stay in China for at most a month to five weeks if his health condition is normal. It is a routine six-month departure for the King, this medical check-up," he said.

"As I know, the King has no plans to meet with Chinese leaders. During the Covid-19 crisis, China leaders will not dare to greet the King. Even officials who escort the King will be also put in 14-day quarantine in the royal residence."
