Casualties rise to 184 deaths post Gaza ceasefire

GAZA: Casualties post the recent ceasefire has risen to 184 deaths and 589 injuries from the airstrike by Israel, according to Gaza health officials.

A Reuters reporter in the city said the east zone of Khan Younis in southern Gaza came under intense bombardment as the deadline lapsed shortly after dawn.

Residents were forced to take to the road with salvageable items and seek shelter further west.

Israel and Hamas continue to blame each other for sabotaging the negotiations and triggering the resumption of violence, though the White House singled out the latter had failed to produce a new list of hostages to release to enable an extension of the truce.

The United Nations (UN) said the fighting would worsen an extreme humanitarian emergency.

"Hell on Earth has returned to Gaza," spokesperson for the U.N. humanitarian office in Geneva Jens Laerke said.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said Israeli forces had blocked all deliveries of aid into Gaza through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.

Residents carried several small children, streaked with blood and covered in dust, out of a house that had been struck in the south in Rafah.

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Hamas had started firing rockets before the pause in hostilities expired, had carried out a deadly shooting attack in Jerusalem on Thursday and had not followed through on commitments on hostages.

"It came to an end because of Hamas. Hamas reneged on commitments it made," he said upon ending the trip to the region recently. --REUTERS
