Red Cross Federation elects Kate Forbes of US as new president

MOSCOW, (Russia) : The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said Monday that American humanitarian and businesswoman Kate Forbes has been elected the new president of the organisations for the next four-year term.

"American humanitarian and businesswoman, Kate Forbes, was elected the new President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) today (December 12)," the IFRC said in a statement on the website, reported Sputnik.

The IFRC called Forbes's election a "historic moment" as she is "only the second woman to hold this position", adding that "this milestone underscores the IFRC's continued commitment to diversity and gender equality in its leadership."

The IFRC also said that her presidency "marks a pivotal shift towards addressing the complexities of the modern world", adding that "a key area of focus under her leadership will be tackling the urgent issues of climate change and migration" and that "local solutions and community empowerment are at the forefront of her agenda."

She will also focus on youth engagement and financial sustainability, leveraging the potential of young volunteers and acknowledging their crucial role in the IFRC, as well as strengthening relationships with governments and donors.

"Communities around the world are witnessing the impacts of climate change, geopolitical tensions and health emergencies. We know the challenges of our modern world demand addressing multiple issues at once. Now is the time to lean into our fundamental principles to deliver on our mission and make communities stronger," the IFRC quoted Forbes as saying in the statement upon her election.

The president is elected for a four-year term, which can be extended only once by a vote of the national federations, the organisation's website said. — Bernama
