JAKARTA: Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has outlined three crucial points concerning the Middle East, focusing primarily on the urgent need to stop the flow of arms to Israel.
In an address at the United Nations Security Council open debate in New York, the minister advocated for the cessation of arms flowing to Israel, expressing deep concern over the potential harm to innocent civilians caused by each weapon.
"Every weapon sent to Israel can be used to kill innocent civilians," she said.
She also called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, emphasising it as a game-changer for everything.
"Most importantly, it will provide space to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza, begin work on post-conflict reconstruction, and advance the process for the two-state solution," the minister said.
She underscored the importance of garnering support for the initiatives of the UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator to pave the way for the delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance.
Lastly, Retno urged the swift granting of full UN membership to Palestine, deeming it crucial for fostering equitable efforts toward a two-state solution and to halt Israel's brutal aggression.
Retno stressed Indonesia's strong opposition to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's refusal of a Palestinian state on January 18, stating that it confirms Israel's ultimate goal to erase Palestine from the world's map.
The minister cautioned that the Council's silence in response to such intentions could escalate into a real and present danger of a full-blown war in the Middle East.
"Israel must be held accountable for its actions, including atrocities in Gaza. No nation is above the law," she said, adding that Indonesia will explore all possible avenues to support Palestine. -- BERNAMA
