Storm kills five people, injures 100 in India's West Bengal state

NEW DELHI: A severe storm killed at least five people and injured more than 100 in eastern Indian state West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Sunday.

The storm damaged houses, uprooted trees and snapped power lines.

"A storm struck. In two-three minutes, many homes were damaged. Five people have died and two are seriously injured," said state chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who visited the area on Sunday night.

She said the government will provide compensation to the next-of-kin of those killed.

About 370 km east of Jalpaiguri, a part of the ceiling at Assam state's Guwahati airport, the gateway to northeastern India, fell in heavy rain on Sunday.

The collapsed section of the airport roof was old and could not bear the impact of a sudden downpour and storm, an airport official said.

"The ceiling broke open and water started flowing inside. However, there was no injury and everything is under control," Utpal Baruah, a senior airport official, told local media.

Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati is managed by major Indian conglomerate Adani Group.

A video circulating on social media showed flooding in the retail area. – BERNAMA
