THE Q&A: Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah

1. WHAT’S YOUR WEEKLY EXERCISE ROUTINE?
Very intense. I do a mix of things because I’m very much into fitness. I do kickboxing, body combat, cardio workout and also high intensity interval training (HIIT). I even do dance classes. For me, the idea of working out is not just to be fit but also to have fun.

2. ARE YOU A GYM JUNKIE OR OUTDOOR EXERCISER? WHY?
I’m a gym junkie. I used to run, you know, to do my 10km runs in the park and all, but I personally found it not so appealing. I found it to be too solitary. I would rather be working out in a group with friends and to enjoy the sessions. But my husband just loves running, he has done marathons in both KL and London.

3. HOW DO YOU GET OVER BEING TOO LAZY TO EXERCISE?
I find that there are certain exercise routines which I like and some which I don’t. I don’t like doing weights, for example, but you still have to push yourself to do it. I’ve also been trying to get into yoga. I’ve been doing yoga, tai chi, pilates, a mix of all in one class and I wouldn’t call it my favourite but I still do them. I like to do workouts that I really enjoy because then it becomes fun. When you enjoy something, it’s not work, it’s fun.

4. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WORKOUT?
Body combat.

5. WEIGHTS OR CARDIO?
Cardio, definitely.

6. WHAT’S THE MOST DRASTIC THING YOU HAVE DONE WHEN IT COMES TO EXERCISE?
I’ve done back to back challenges. Meaning I do three or four different classes in one day. There’s a group of us who do these challenges and we end up doing three or four classes in a day. It’s very intense.

7. WHAT’S YOUR TYPICAL BREAKFAST?
I love roti canai and nasi lemak. I may be into fitness but I do like my indulgence food.

8. WHAT’S ONE JUNK FOOD YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT?
One? There’re so many! (laughs). Ok, give me a burger and fries with a rootbeer float and I’m happy.

9. HOW LONG DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT?
I would be happy if I could get eight hours but these days, I tend to sleep and wake up early too. My workouts start at 7am and I wake up by 6am. On the average, I get about seven hours plus sleep a night.

10. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FITNESS APP OR FITNESS TRACKER
I use Fitbit Charge HR. It’s great because you are connected to friends and you can set challenges and that’s what I do. My friends and I always set a work week challenge or weekend challenge and whoever gets the most number of steps is the winner and I’ve beaten the boys each time. Except for the last one.

11. WHAT IS YOUR FITNESS AIM?
To be healthy and happy. When you work out, you feel happy too. As you get older you realise that being healthy is so important because when you are fit, you get to do more things. When you’re just lying around and not doing much or eating too much, your energy level is lower. I think working out brings up your energy level. My schedule is always packed so I need to be healthy and fit to keep up.

12. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING?
I work out. I like my morning workouts. Working out in the morning is a good thing because then you’re set and ready for the whole day.
