Speeding cars at pedestrian crossing

KUALA LUMPUR: Pedestrians fear for their safety when using a pedestrian crossing along Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi, as the lack of traffic lights cause cars to speed when approaching the crossing.

“Motorists just speed up, and most of them brake at the very last minute.

“The situation is alarming as there have been too many near misses,” a complainant, who wanted to be known as Sunny, told Actionline.

He said he hoped authorities would help do something about this problem before anything untoward happened.

Housewife Siti Nadiah Md Yusof, 29, said most of the drivers would ignore the pedestrian crossing at the place.

“There are three pedestrian crossing signboards near the spot, but the drivers still speed.”

Izwan Haris, a business operator at the commercial area nearby, said he walked from his house daily to his shop using the crossing.

“During peak hours, drivers tend to drive very fast, ignoring the pedestrians.

“But if I walk around 10am, most of the drivers would stop and give way to the pedestrians,” the 36-year-old said.

ACTIONLINE:

A City Hall spokesman said the council understood the situation faced by pedestrians at the location.

“There are two traffic lights and two pedestrian crossings on the same road.”

He said City Hall needed to study the traffic volume and see if there was a need for new pedestrian traffic lights to be installed there.

The council may build a few more speed bumps to slow vehicles down, he added.
