No longer a walk in the park

THE water features in Taman Tasik Shah Alam, Selangor, have been collecting stagnant water, making them possible mosquito-breeding sites.

Salehah Kamal, a visitor, said the park was once filled with greenery and water features.

“Now, I go the park with my family for a weekend stroll only in the morning, as I fear there might be mosquitoes.

“It was really a beautiful place for walks. It was filled with coloured plants. The whole park gave a feeling of tranquility.

“But, now, it’s sad to look at. The water features are filled with stagnant water and it looks like nothing has been done to maintain the park.”

Salehah said she had been visiting the park since she was a girl and it was disappointing to see the park in a bad state.

Checks showed that not only were the water features left unkempt, but the pathway was uneven with some facilities unusable.

“People go to the park to jog, have a picnic with their families or let their kids play at the playground.

“With Shah Alam having many dengue cases, I wonder why nothing is being done by the local council to improve the park.

“This place could be turned into a beautiful recreational area once it is spruced up.”

A Shah Alam Municipal Council (MBSA) spokesman said the council was in the midst of upgrading the park.

“MBSA, through the Parks and Recreation Department, has been working to beautify it.

“We are upgrading the water features so visitors can enjoy them.

“Work on the pathway is being done in stages.”

He added that MBSA was replacing old facilities with new ones.

“The council is building a children’s bicycle track and upgrading the parking lot.

“The park is one of the main attractions for recreational activities and we are doing everything in our power to improve it for the enjoyment of everyone.”
