Fear over flash floods

SUNGAI Buloh Jaya (SB Jaya) Industrial Park residents want the local council to investigate the frequent flash floods in the area.

Mohsin Achmed, who works at a shop there, said there were six flash floods last year.

“There shouldn’t even be a flood. Those of us who work and stay here are concerned that the flash floods will get worse.

“Whenever it rains heavily, the whole area will be inundated knee-high, hindering vehicles from going out or into SB Jaya.”

A Kampung Bahagia resident, who only wanted to be known as Milah, said the problem had been raised with the authorities, but action had yet to be taken.

“We worry for our children’s safety as we fear water-borne diseases.

“Each time it floods, mud and rubbish flow into our houses.”

Milah asked if the authorities had plans to resolve the matter and prevent future flash floods.

ACTIONLINE:

Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) vice-president Datuk Juhari Ahmad said the local council was discussing with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to find ways to solve the problem.

He said the flash floods occurred due to a bottleneck.

“However, because the bottleneck is in an area under the Shah Alam Municipal Council’s (MBSA) jurisdiction, MPS can’t do anything. That is why we sought DID’s help.”

An MBSA spokesman said although the area of the problem was under MBSA’s jurisdiction, river-related issues should be forwarded to DID.
