Motorists trapped in stalled vehicle during flash floods

JOHOR BARU: Two flash flood victims trapped in a BWM were rescued along Jalan Persiaran Molek Utama, Taman Molek, near here, today.

A 70-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy were rescued by the Johor Jaya Fore and Rescue Department personnel, following non-stop heavy downpour since 1pm today, causing the water level raising to almost knee level.

Operation commander Sufian Mohamed Lis said the rescuers were on standby following heavy-rain, thus when the 4.38pm distress call was received, they immediately dispatched 12 personnel to the scene.

The senior citizen and the teenager who were not related, were stranded for a few minutes when the water level rose suddenly.

The woman who was in the BMW, had asked the boy to seek shelter in her car when she saw him walking along the road in front of a petrol station near the housing estate.

Both are uninjured but were in slight shock when they got caught in gushing water.

Meanwhile, the Johor Baru City Council flash flood unit- Skuad Kilat MBJB, spokesman said they identified several main roads in their council jurisdiction inundated by flood waters.

This includes Jalan Rosmerah Utama, Jalan Harmonium 24, Jalan Dato Sulaiman, ⁠Jalan Setia 10 and Setia 11 in Taman Setia Indah, ⁠Jalan Mutiara Emas Utama in Bandar Baru Uda, Kampung Ubi and Jalan Mohd Amin 7.

The spokesman said the squad members with the help from the Public Works Department (JKR), and Johor district Office personnel immediately went into action by redirecting traffic, checked clogged drains and water outlets and swiftly cleared them, and also cut off fallen trees and moved them away.

The MBJB Skuad Kilat was established in Dec 2021, is the council first responders in case of flash floods.
