Sterling retreats after Manchester's suspected terrorist attack

SINGAPORE: The Sterling extended losses on Tuesday after a suspected terrorist attack killed at least 19 people and wounded 50 at a pop concert in Manchester, while the euro held gains made after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the currency was "too weak."

The incident took place just two-and-a-half weeks before an election that Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to win easily, though polls showing that the contest is tightening had put the Sterling under some pressure.

The Sterling eased 0.1 per cent to US$1.299, extending Monday's 0.3 per cent loss.

The pound dropped 0.3 per cent to 144.32 yen, after losing 0.2 per cent on Monday.

If the attack on the concert by US singer Arianna Grande is confirmed as a terrorist incident, this would be the deadliest attack in Britain by militants since four British Muslims killed 52 people in suicide bombings on London's transport system in July 2005. – REUTERS
