Fernandes: New airports operators needed

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Bhd group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes has taken to his social media page on Facebook to call for more competition in the LCCT airports operating scene in the country.

Taking a customary swipe at Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, he explained that Sabah's tourism sector enjoyed tremendous boom thanks to his budget airline servicing the Kota Kinabalu route, but tourism growth there has somewhat slowed down since Malaysia airports closed the low cost terminal there.

"It's amazing what airasia has done in Sabah. Tourism is booming. And everyone associated with Sabah Tourism acknowledges that it is AirAsia that has done this. Now growth has gone backwards after Malaysia Airports have closed the low cost terminal.

"Need an Lcct in Sabah. New airports operators needed. As Malaysia Airports only intrested in full service terminals," he wrote.

In a separate posting on Facebook at the same time, he said he loves competition and believes, "in the free market not monopolies."
