TNB, Sime Darby launch biogas stations

KUALA LUMPUR: Two biogas power stations developed by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Sime Darby Bhd were launched at Layang-Layang, Simpang Rengam in Johor last week.

Both the biogas power stations produce electricity using palm oil effluent.

In a statement, TNB said the biogas stations were located at Hadapan estate in Layang-Layang, Johor and Flemington estate in Bagan Datuk, Perak.

“The Hadapan Biogas Station, which began operation on December 30 last year, has an installed capacity of 1.6MW, while the Flemington Biogas Station which also has the same installed capacity, began its operations on January 26, this year.

“The electricity generated from both the stations are distributed directly to the national grid,” it said yesterday.

The national utility corporation said the join-effort has allowed them to reaffirm its position as the main player for renewable energy in Malaysia and unlocks the values of palm oil effluents from plantations owned by Sime Darby.

Present during the launch were Sime Darby Bhd president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh and TNB’s chief executive officer Datuk Seri Azman Mohd, as well as Sustainable Energy Development Authority of Malaysia (SEDA) chief executive officer Catherine Ridu.
