Worldwide Holdings bags RM1.5m Selangor government contract

KUALA LUMPUR: Worldwide Holdings Bhd has bagged a contract worth RM1.5 million from Selangor government to extend its post closure maintenance works of three landfills for another five years.

The three landfills include Air Hitam Sanitary Landfill (Puchong), Sg Kembong Dumpsite (Hulu Langat) and Kubang Badak Sanitary Landfill (Kuala Selangor).

The landfills were closed in 2006 as the waste management practice was deemed not sustainable towards the environment.

Under the agreement, Worldwide Holdings will continue to maintain the three landfills which are now open for the public to use for recreational activities.

It will also build a renewable energy park in Sg Kembong Dumpsite (Hulu Langat) and Kubang Badak Sanitary Landfill (Kuala Selangor) to provide electricity to homes nearby.

Chief executive officer Datin Paduka Norazlina Zakaria said the agreement reflects its capabilities and experience in renewable energy as well as maintaining landfills following the closure of Air Hitam Sanitary Landfill.

The Air Hitam Sanitary Landfill, before it was closed in 2006 and afterwards turned into a recreational park, received and treated more than six million tonnes of solid waste.

After its closure, the landfill now has also served as a renewable energy power plant which produces 2MW of electricity using methane gas to 2,000 houses nearby.

At the signing ceremony of the agreement, Worldwide Holdings also introduced e-World which would enhance accessibilities for local councils to waste management database using centralised data management system.

Norazlina said through e-World, local councils can now easily verify, refer and analyse information they want to tackle waste management issues.

“The system is also a strategic move for Worldwide Holdings as an added value in their waste management service to improve efficiencies and allows convenience,” she added.
