Jan 23: KL shares higher at opening

KUALA LUMPUR: Shares on Bursa Malaysia were higher at today's opening on buying support, a dealer said.

At 9.08 am, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) stood at 1,834.27, up by 1.12 points, from Mondays’close of 1,833.15, after opening 2.95 points better at 1,836.10.

Gainers outpaced losers 220 to 85, while 238 counters were unchanged, 1,305 untraded and 31 others suspended.

Turnover stood at 341.80 million shares worth RM102.94 million.

The dealer said the Asian stock markets were trading on an uptrend following the deal announced by US Senators to end a three-day government shutdown, sending Wall Street’s main indices to record highs.

US lawmakers passed a short-term measure on Monday to fund the federal government through February 8.

Among heavyweights, Maybank fell three sen to RM9.84, Tenaga and Public Bank were flat each at RM15.82 and RM20.96 respectively, while Petronas Chemicals was six sen higher at RM8.06.

Of the actives, Sumatec Resources and Priceworth International inched up half-a-sen each to 12 sen and 28 sen respectively, Tiger Synergy was flat at four sen, with Ucrest was three sen lower at 54.5 sen.

The FBM Emas Index was 18.92 points higher at 13,258.68, the FBMT 100 Index rose 18.12 points to 12,926.88, and the FBM 70 up 57.66 points to 16,651.32.

The FBM Emas Shariah Index rose 48.47 points to 13,689.66, but the FBM Ace improved 43.42 points to 6,746.94.

Sector-wise, the Finance Index fell 2.54 points to 17,351.79 and the Plantation Index gained 28.26 points to 8,069.92, while the Industrial Index advanced 32.18 points to 3,382.79.
