KUALA LUMPUR: New vehicles sales for January was 0.2 per cent or 92 units lower than the same month last year.

On a year-on-year basis, new vehicles sales for the month dropped to 44,575 units from 44,667 units, said the Malaysian Automotive Association.

On a month-on-month basis, vehicles sales shrank 19 per cent last month or 10,154 units lower than December.

The MAA - which represents over a dozen car manufacturers, importers and retailers - said this was due to the fact that sales promotion and offers by car companies were concluded in December 2017.

It expects sales volume for February to be lower than January due to short working month following Chinese New Year festive holidays.

On production, new vehicles produced in January were 49.3 per cent higher at 68,002 units from 45,532 units a year ago.

The MAA had earlier projected vehicle sales to grow 2.3 per cent this year to 590,000 units from 576,635 units last year.
