Jaya Grocer opens first store in Penang, eyes three new outlets before March 2019

GEORGE TOWN: Jaya Grocer will open another three new outlets between now and March next year in their expansion bid.

Two of the new outlets will be sited in the Klang Valley while the third one will be in the south.

Jaya Grocer founder Teng Yew Huat said they would open between three and five outlets annually.

“We are constantly eyeing new areas to open our stores to cater to more clientele. The next few months will be an exciting time for us and we are anticipating tight schedule,” he told newsmen at the opening of Jaya Grocer’s first outlet in Penang inside the Gurney Paragon Mall here today.

Built at a cost of RM6 million (excluding the merchandises), the new store, the 28th in total, has a floor space of 25,000 sq ft.

About 4,000 sq ft is reserved for food and beverage outlets, where customers will be able to enjoy their signature “cook-for-you” service once Grocer Canteen is opened by the year-end.

This is Jaya Grocer’s first foray into the upper northern region.

It has a store in Ipoh, Perak built two years ago.

Teng said the new store in Gurney Paragon Mall would open up another new avenue for grocery shopping in the state.

“This, personally, is our best located store and among the five larger stores.

“Gurney Paragon Mall is special to us due to its good tenant mix and its conducive location,” he said, adding that he has always had Penang in mind but there was no suitable location in the past.

Present was Jaya Grocer’s operations director Daniel Teng, who is the founder’s son and Hunza Group founder Datuk Seri Khor Teng Tong.

Jaya Grocer is a family-run lifestyle fresh market operated by Trendcell Sdn Bhd.

It started at Jaya 33 back in 2008 and celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
