TM reiterates its commitment to upgrade internet speed

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has reiterated that Streamyx customers who are residing in non-unifi coverage areas will be upgraded double of their existing speeds (up to 8Mbps) for free.

TM said they can also opt for the group’s wireless 4G LTE service where there is coverage.

“We wish to highlight that these upgrading exercise are being implemented in stages and are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2019,” it said in a statement.

Yesterday, Communications and Multimedia deputy minister Eddin Syazlee Shith was quoted as saying that customers that were out of range or had no unifi access would have the alternative of their Streamyx speed to be upgraded to 8Mbps or receive 4G LTE access.

“The government is aiming to upgrade all Streamyx user services to unifi through TM by March next year,” Eddin was quoted as saying.

TM said to date, the company had upgraded close to 60 per cent out of over 340,000 Streamyx customers residing in unifi coverage areas to unifi at the same price of their current plan.

“We encourage the remaining Streamyx customers who have not joined the unifi bandwagon to grab this opportunity for the free upgrade,” it said.

TM also reiterated that for Streamyx customers who are currently residing in a non-unifi areas, the group would continuously invest in the best fit for purpose technologies to bring them high speed broadband.

Thus far, it said close to 70 per cent  of the upgradable Streamyx customers who reside in non-unifi coverage areas had been moved up to double their current Streamyx speed where technology permits at the same price of their current broadband plan, leaving another 65,000 who have yet to move up to higher speeds.

“As we have highlighted earlier, due to copper technology limitations, the copper network is only able to deliver speeds up to 8Mbps,” it said.
