TNB's JEP second coal-fired power plant kicks off commerial operation

KUALA LUMPUR: The second of two coal-fired power plants owned and run by Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) subsidiary Jimah East Power Sdn Bhd kicked off its commercial operation last Friday.

With the powering up of the 1,000 megawatt (MW) plant, TNB said it had reinforced Peninsular Malaysia's power supply to 25,981 MW.

"The development of Jimah East Power in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan took 49 months since construction started in 2015," the utility giant said in a statement.

The first 1,000 MW power plant had achieved its commercial operation date on August 22 this year, it added.

TNB said both plants utilised ultra-supercritical technology, an efficient coal-burning technology with 40 per cent efficiency as against conventional coal-fired power plant which has 36 per cent efficiency.

Apart from Jimah East Power, TNB has two other coal-fired plants using USC, namely Manjung 4 and Manjung 5 in its Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station in Lumut, Perak.

TNB owns a 70 per cent stake in Jimah East Power while Mitsui & Co Ltd and The Chugoku Electric Power Co Ltd hold 15 per cent each.
