Astro welcomes Smith as new TV CEO and group COO

KUALA LUMPUR: Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd (Astro) announced the appointment of Euan Smith as chief executive officer for TV and group chief operating officer effective 1 April 2020.

The move is part of Astro’s business and people transformation plan in view of the ongoing changes in the media and entertainment industry.

Smith is an experienced media and entertainment executive who has held senior roles in Sky UK, Sky Germany, Fox and most recently in Foxtel.

"We are pleased to welcome Euan Smith on board. He comes with global Pay TV experience and will be a valuable addition to the team.

"He has a proven track record as a transformation specialist and we look forward to working with him to accelerate our goals," Astro group chief executive officer Henry Tan said in a Bursa Malaysia filing today.

In the past year, Astro has put several strategies which have included differentiated services such as Broadband and OTTs, and enhanced customer experience via the new interface and the Ultra Box.

The company has also strengthened its content offering by investing in signature local IPs, improving customer service and initiatives to curb piracy.

Trained at University of Birmingham (Mechanical Engineering) and Harvard Business School, Smith is an established media executive with a skill set spanning both Business and Technology.

He brings a wealth of experience in media operations and business transformation.

During his career he has led a step-change in technology, operations and customer service playing a vital role in the turnaround of Sky Germany and Foxtel.
