MyIPO, TikTok ink deal to boost intellectual property awareness

KUALA LUMPUR: The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) has partnered with short-form mobile video platform TikTok to maintain and enhance compliance with intellectual property legislation in Malaysia.

In a joint statement, MyIPO and TikTok said the partnership aims to ensure that the policies and enforcement of intellectual property on the TikTok platform align with intellectual property acts in Malaysia.

Both parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) yesterday.

They said an essential aspect of the MoU is the initiative to promote and conduct training and the dissemination of knowledge and information on intellectual property to the TikTok community, especially among entrepreneurs actively engaged within the TikTok Shop.

In Malaysia, over one million sellers, 98 per cent of whom are small medium enterprises are on TikTok Shop.

Simultaneously, TikTok introduced the Intellectual Property Protection Center (IPPC), a dedicated platform designed to enable intellectual property owners to file complaints directly with TikTok regarding any sellers on TikTok Shop believed to be infringing intellectual property laws.

Through this collaboration, MyIPO and TikTok affirm their commitment to ensuring that the intellectual property ecosystem in Malaysia functions effectively and benefits all stakeholders.

It is hoped that this joint effort will raise greater awareness about intellectual property and encourage more individuals, especially entrepreneurs conducting business on TikTok Shop, to understand and protect their intellectual property rights.
