MyIX commends the government for emphasising digital, communications in the cabinet reshuffle

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX) has commended the government for emphasising digital and communications in the cabinet reshuffle announced earlier this week.

MyIX welcomes the appointment of Gobind Singh Deo and Datuk Ugak Anak Kumbong as Malaysia's new digital minister and deputy minister, respectively, the exchange said in a statement.

MyIX said the introduction of two ministries, the Digital Ministry and Communications Ministry, in place of what was previously the Ministry of Communications and Digital, signifies a strategic reorganisation that underscores the government's commitment to prioritising digital transformation and communications advancements.

This is in line with expectations that the Malaysian Digital Economy would contribute 25.5 per cent of Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025 and emerge as a strategic engine of growth for the country, MyIX said.

MyIX chairman Chiew Kok Hin said the two ministries are set to enhance Malaysia's digital landscape further.

"With Gobind Singh Deo's and Datuk Ugak Anak Kumbong's extensive experience in technology and communications, their leadership is poised to drive additional initiatives that foster local innovation and digital literacy while ensuring digital benefits are accessible to all segments of society.

"By promoting digital inclusion and accessibility, Malaysia can continue to bridge the digital divide and create opportunities for continued economic growth and social development," he said.

"Meanwhile, the presence of the Communications Ministry led by Minister Fahmi Fadzil and his deputy Teo Nie Ching, continues to ensure that our country's communication infrastructure, including telecommunications and broadcasting, receives dedicated attention.

"This is pivotal for maintaining a robust and reliable digital ecosystem, which is foundational for economic growth and competitiveness," he said.

At its end, MyIX remains responsible for keeping internet traffic local while ensuring fast and resilient internet speed and reliability throughout Malaysia.

MyIX is a not-for-profit and the first neutral Internet Exchange connecting local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and content providers to exchange internet traffic.

Internet exchange points are critical components of the internet infrastructure that facilitate the exchange of internet traffic between different networks and internet service providers (ISPs).

MyIX serves as a peering platform where ISPs and content providers can connect and exchange traffic more efficiently, reducing the need for data to traverse long-distance routes.

"As the largest internet exchange in Malaysia, MyIX continues to align with national digital objectives, fortifying Malaysia's internet ecosystem to ensure seamless, secure and robust connectivity," said Chiew.
