Eight-gen Porsche 911 arrives in Malaysia, priced from RM1.15m

SEPANG: Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP) launched the 2019 Porsche 911 at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) today.

The all-new eight-generation Porsche 911 – dubbed the 992 – arrives in two trims, the 911 Carrera S and the 911 Carrera 4S which sell at RM1,150,000 and RM1,220,000 respectively.

“The new 911 is a reflection of the past and a vision of the future, with its iconic silhouette and timeless design. It remains a sports car icon that has retained the public’s fascination since its arrival in the automotive scene over half a century ago,” said Christopher Hunter, chief executive officer of SDAP during the launch of the new 911.

“Due to the passionate and loyal following here, it comes as no surprise that Malaysia is the top market for the 911 in 2018 within the Porsche Asia Pacific region. The 911 GT3 Cup Car training at Porsche Experience Centre Sepang also took place for the first time in South East Asia in 2018, a reflection of the fervent customer base,” he added.

Both variants of the new 911 are powered by a3.0-litre flat-six turbocharged engines that is more powerful and stronger than before, at 30hp and 30Nm of torque more.

This means the car now makes 450hp at 6,500rpm and 530Nm of torque at 2,300 to 5,000rpm, enabling it to sprint from zero to 100kph in 3.7 seconds (Carrera S) and 3.6 seconds (Carrera 4S) respectively.

The engine is paired to a fully developed 8-speed PDK transmission, the sole transmission available here.

Top speeds are rated at 308kph for the rear-wheel drive Carrera S and 306kph for the all-wheel drive Carrera 4S.

The new 911 comes with a pack of new technologies. Available for the first time is Porsche’s Wet Mode, a function that enables the car to precondition itself to slippery conditions and gives appropriate warning to the driver.

Next is the optional Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera for better visibility at night. Another feature is emergency braking that is fitted as standard, which will autonomously brake the car in the event of collision risks.

Exterior wise, the new Porsche 911 receives new styling cues which include redesigned LED headlights with four-point daytime-running lights (DRL), 45mm wider front body, new front air intakes, and tapered smooth side contour with the integration of the electrical pop-out handles.

At the rear, there’s wider, variable-position spoiler topped with a seamless light bar. The air intake below the rear windscreen now features vertically-arranged louvres and a new third brake light positioned in the middle.

The cabin of the new 911 pays homage to the first-generation 911, boasting a flat, straight dashboard design and a classic-styled analogue rev counter, centrally-positioned on the instrument cluster.

At either sides of the rev meter are high-resolution 7-inch displays each, and a new 10.9-inch touchscreen sits on the centre console, featuring Porsche Communication Management (PCM).

Elsewhere, the new 911 is equipped with adaptive cruise control, automatic distance control, stop-and-go function and reversible occupant protection.

While the unveiling of the iconic sports car took centre stage, teams at SIC paddocks were busy with the preparation of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia (PCCA) which is happening during the weekend for 911 GT3 Cup racers.
