Unsure whether to 'balik kampung' this weekend? Waze data might help you decide

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic congestions are expected this weekend as school holidays are around the corner. Besides Monday has been declared a public holiday for Hari Raya Haji .

Schools close on Aug 9 for Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, and on Aug 10 for the other states.

Gridlock is expected in parts of the North South Highway. If you are undecided whether to brave the traffic jams, Waze has thankfully generated some useful data from its endless supply of user trips.

Waze expects a 39 per cent increase in trips during this peak season. If you are really keen on making that trip, then gas up early.

Based on Waze's 2018 data, the app predicts there will be 38 per cent more navigations to petrol stations. Avoid the crowd and fuel up as early as possible before the trip, and try not to wait until the car has only a quarter tank before refuelling.

If you want to avoid traffic jams, avoid going out for food. This time around Waze predicts an increase of 95 per cent food-related navigations, and mostly to fast food joints.

Unless you're meeting friends and families, how about calling for food delivery service instead?

Also, expect malls to be a popular destination as well. You may face problems in trying to locate an available parking spot.

Perhaps online shopping would be wise, or try to e-hail a ride to your community shopping mall instead.
