BMW Motorrad's new boxer twins

BMW Motorrad’s range of Shiftcam boxer twins has expanded with the introduction of the R1250R and R1250RS.

Launched in conjunction with the Sepang MotoGP race recently, the new twins spot few differences but share the same chassis and engine.

Speaking of which, the Shiftcam 1,254cc horizontally-opposed twin-cylinder engine, which produces 136hp at 7,750rpm and 143Nm of torque at 6,250rpm, is also shared with the GS series.

The R1250RS features a half fairing, which ups the touring factor considerably while also tweaking the ergonomics slightly to provide a sportier riding position.

The R1250R is a naked roadster with an upright riding position.

The new twins sport a set of 45mm-diameter upside-down telescopic forks in lieu of the traditional Telelever setup, while in the rear is a Paralever single-sided swingarm. Front suspension is adjustable for preload only, while the rear is adjustable for preload, compression and rebound.

Both rely on Brembo calipers for retardation and both get BMW’s Riding Mode Pro, which includes dynamic traction control (DTC), anti-lock braking system (ABS) Pro, HSC Pro, dynamic brake control (DBC), Shift Assist Pro, Keyless Ride, daytime running lights and Style HP aesthetics.

Wet weight for the R1250R is 239kg while it is 243kg for the R1250RS. The two models have a seat height of 820mm. Optional low seat and sport seat are 760mm and 840mm, respectively.

The high-resolution 6.5 inch full colour thin-film-transistor (TFT) display is smartphone-enabled via Bluetooth, naturally.

The many accessories for the new twins include hard shell panniers with painted covers, top case with painted cover, tinted windshield, machined and adjustable footpegs and brake/gearshift levers, machined brake and clutch levers and engine spoiler.

Retail price for the completely built-up (CBU) Shiftcams twins are RM102,500 and RM106,500, respectively.

Meanwhile, fans of the S1000RR can now rejoice with the introduction of the 2020 model of BMW’s uber-superbike.

In Malaysia, it will only come with the M Sport package and is a CBU model. BMW drew heavily from its involvement in World Superbike (WSBK) racing for the complete redesign.

An all-new Flex Frame chassis and the new 999cc inline-four engine with an output of 207hp at 13,500rpm and 113Nm of torque at 11,000rpm is the result.

The engine utilises ShiftCam Technology, which varies the valve timings and valve strokes on the intake side while still complying with emissions regulations.

Weight is shaved considerably to 193.5kg from 208kg previously.

Four ride modes with an additional three user-customisable “Pro” modes with DTC, ABS Pro and DTC Wheelie detection as well as throttle curve (torque adjustment) and engine brake control comprise the rider aids.

Electronic suspension in the form of BMW’s Dynamic Damping Control (DDC) comes as a standard, as is the ShiftPro quickshifter.

Brembo brakes are eschewed in favour of BMW-logoed Hayes calipers. The redesigned 6.5-inch full-colour high resolution TFT display is individually customisable and interestingly, includes three racing specific modes.

The M-Sport moniker means the S1000RR comes with the world’s first factory carbon-fibre wheels, an M-Sport seat and a maintenance-free lightweight battery.

It also means the only colour scheme is BMW Motorsport colours of Racing Blue, Light White and Racing Red.

Pricing for the S1000RR is RM138,500 with BMW Motorrad Malaysia’s all-new three-year warranty and three-year roadside assistance programme.
