UTP to host 5th World Engineering Science and Technology Congress

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) will host the 5th World Engineering Science and Technology Congress (ESTCON) to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on August 13 and 14.

UTP vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib said this year’s theme would be “Science, Technology & Humanities: Reinventing the Future”.

“Through this congress, delegates and participants will work together to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends and concerns, practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted in this new revolution.

“We have an excellent programme lined up, and a number of ‘heavyweight’ speakers who will be sharing their expertise on current trends and issues on Industry 4.0 from a global perspective,” he added.

He said one of the three speakers who will be delivering his keynote addresses during the opening ceremony is Dr David Wood, Chair London Futurists and principal of Delta Wisdom. He will be touching on the topic “Anticipating Successive Waves of Changes as the 4th Industrial Revolution Accelerates”.

The other two speakers are Prof Datuk Dr Asma Ismail, president of Academy Of Sciences Malaysia and vice-chancellor Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Prof Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani president and group chief executive of Sirim Berhad.

Dr Asma’s talk is titled “A Road Map for Malaysian Science”, while Dr Ahmad will share his views on the Malaysian 4th Industrial Revolution Standard.

Meanwhile, Prof Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Laureate Social Entrepreneur and founder of Grameen Bank, will deliver his keynote address entitled “A World of Three Zeros” during the closing ceremony.

He said the congress will also act as a platform to help innovators and inventors to commercialise their inventions through its Innovation Pitching programme.

“Introduced in ESTCON 2014, the programme allows innovators and inventors to pitch new technologies to potential investors for commercialisation.

“ESTCON 2018 is relevant to everyone in the organisation. We believe participation at this congress will benefit all participants locally and globally, both in terms of learnings and networking potential,” Mohamed Ibrahim said.
