'Speakables' helps sub-urban students be more confident in speaking English

PORT DICKSON: Students in the sub-urban areas are often associated with poor proficiency in the English language, and this will be a disadvantage to them.

Therefore, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Saujana here, in association with Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Rembau campus organised a programme to help sub-urban students to be more confident in speaking the language.

Called the ‘Speakables: The Final Chapter’, the one-day programme that involved 23 committee members of the university’s Public Speaking course, helped 49 Form 4 students to strengthen their communication skills in line with the programme’s objective, which aimed at enhancing self-confidence and public speaking skills especially among sub-urban school students.

Muhammad Azril Izuan Ramlan, the programme advisor and a lecturer at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, said Speakables is a series of academic community outreach project that seeks to improve English proficiency in general.

The programme was divided into three entertaining modules – Toastmasters, Island Hopping and Treasure Hunts – that require the participants to speak in English.

Project Manager Wan Aiqha Liyana Wan Zaiful Arman said the modules were set to instill an element of fun in learning.

“When we enjoy what we learn, we will definitely remember it more,” she said.

Meanwhile, principal of SMK Bukit Saujana, Roslan Mohd Zainal, expressed his gratitude and welcomed any programme that would help improve the quality of education among the students.

“Universities and schools should work together to ensure that the future generation is ready to inherit this country one day,” added Roslan.

Previously, ‘Speakables’ was organised at several other sub-urban schools in Negri Sembilan
