Tech talk: Actress Nadia Brian

Actress Nadia Brian talks about tech and its place in the creative industry

WHAT’S YOUR STAND ON BEING DIGITAL-SAVVY?
It’s 2017. Like it or not, we have to embrace technology. Being digitally-driven can open up opportunities and broaden our personal goals.

My only comment would be that we should all tone down on the sharing bit. I feel that society is now oversharing their activities (thoughts included) just for the sake of maintaining visibility.

In my line of work, for instance, exclusivity is often times overlooked. In a recent production shoot I was involved in, all the cast and crew were told to tune out from their social media platforms when on set. This was to refrain us from giving away too much of the plot and kill the excitement of the picture.

It has happened countless times where potential audiences already know the scenes even before its release.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS A factor IN MAINTAINING THE ART OF FILM-MAKING THEN?
Honestly, being mindful about what we upload should be understood and respected by all actors/actresses today without them having the need to be told — it’s plain logic. I personally have nothing against social media as a platform because we still need it to streamline campaigns, marketing promos and to stay in touch with fans. It really just boils down to attitude. If we keep it in check, there wouldn’t be much of a problem.

HOW DO YOU KEEP UP WITH SOCIAL NETWORKING?
My social media status is reasonably active. Not too public or private, just in-between. I do agree that if you want to remain in the public eye (especially in this modern age), having an online presence is the way to go but as I have said, there are responsibilities that come with it.

I only like to spread stuff that I know will benefit my followers — things on fitness, work ventures and the like, nothing malicious.

Same goes for who I follow — only profiles (I religiously keep up with Adriana Lima, I think she’s quite the force) who help inspire me.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF BREAKTHROUGH CELEBRITIES THAT GET THEIR START ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
I personally don’t have a problem with these social media stars. Why should I? This new breed of personalities should be celebrated because they are cool and creative. The debate that these influencers are short on talent is quite unfair because they make the industry more colourful. The way they get their start (using social networking tools) may be different but we shouldn’t be so negative about it.

I’m all about creating a healthy support system for talents to thrive in.

MANY CELEBRITIES (NEW AND OLD) SET UP ONLINE BUSINESSES TO ENRICH THEIR STARDOM. WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN FOLLOWING THAT PATH IN THE FUTURE?
I have been getting that question a lot lately. I’m not sure if it’s a trend but I have not developed a legit interest (on having an online business). Yet, it’s too early to tell. I may need to do a lot of research if I am to go into entrepreneurship. I’m still trying to make my mark as an actress. I will probably be taking up hosting jobs next if I am to expand my creative horizons.
