Sabah first state to get Celcom's fibre optic high-speed Internet service

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has become the first state to receive Celcom’s fibre optic high-speed Internet service.

It is now available in the state capital and in Penampang, Putatan, Keningau, Tawau and Felda Sahabat in Lahad Datu.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman, who launched the event, said the state government wanted improvements in the telecommunications infrastructure to support businesses and Sabah’s economy in general.

“We therefore welcome Celcom’s initiative. This marks a new digital experience era for Internet users here to enjoy better quality Internet service.

“I hope other telecommunication companies will follow Celcom’s lead in providing the best Internet service for the people of Sabah,” he added.

Celcom Axiata Berhad chief executive officer Michael Kuehner said: “We chose Sabah as the first location based on market demand and the needs of consumers, which we find still lack access to high speed Internet, compared with other states.

“We aim to provide the fastest Internet connection in Sabah through reliable fibre optic infrastructure,” he said at the launch of the company’s home fibre and business fibre products here. Both products offer speeds up to 10 times faster than that of normal Internet connections.

“Besides the six coverage areas starting this month, Celcom will add five more areas which can access fibre optic service by year-end.

“They are Kudat, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Sandakan and Lahad Datu.”

Celcom chief marketing officer Zalman Aefendy Zainal Abidin said there were plans to expand the company’s products to other states, but did not elaborate.
