[Game on] Free shoot'em-up games for PlayStation Plus

Bring them on!

GAMERS always look forward to a whole new lineup of free games. When you think of free games, you may not think of anything major but some high-profile games are included from time to time.

Let’s take a look at the official free games lineup available for the PlayStation Plus.

1. MAD MAX

Based on the popular franchise of the same name, Mad Max is a post-apocalyptic open world action game with an emphasis on vehicular combat.

It follows Max Rockatansky who is trying to survive the barren wasteland.

Due to the environment’s chaotic nature, you have no choice but to fight to survive, using brutal on-ground and vehicular tactics against vicious bandits.

A reluctant hero with an instinct for survival,Max wants nothing more than to leave the madness behind and find solace in the storied Plains of Silence.

Players are challenged with treacherous missions as they scavenge the dangerous landscape for supplies to build the ultimate combat vehicle.

Fun fact: This Mad Max game was initially created to tie in with a Mad Max animated film as well as the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road. However, the plan was scrapped due to changes in the development team as well as Electronic Arts purchasing the rights to develop a Fury Road tie-in game. While the character itself is still the same Mad Max, the game has its own standalone story.

2. HEAVY RAIN

One of the most highly acclaimed PlayStation-exclusive titles in recent years, Heavy Rain is an action-adventure game with an emphasis on storytelling.

This gripping psychological thriller is filled with innumerable twists and turns.

You need to think fast, and act even faster as every choice you make will have its own consequences, shaping the story according to your actions.

Spanning four days of mystery and suspense, the hunt is on for a murderer known only as the Origami Killer, named after his macabre habit of leaving behind folded paper shapes at crime scenes.

Four characters, each following his/her own leads and with his/her own motives, must take part in a desperate attempt to prevent the killer from claiming a new victim.

Fun fact: Heavy Rain had a very extensive development process which spanned four years. With a distribution budget of US$40 million (RM190 million), the game had to undergo 170 days of shooting with more than 70 actors and stuntmen, and with an additional 60 days to animate the faces of over 50 actors. It utilised 60 sets for shooting and produced over 30,000 different animations.

3. BLAZBLUE: CENTRALFICTION

He has in his possession the Blue Grimoire and is pursued by a large group of vigilantes and soldiers from the World Void Information Control Organisation.

All Ragna has to rely on is a

“pre-established harmony” left in his memory, otherwise known as the “Centralfiction”.

Fun fact: BlazBlue: Centralfiction marks a few notable events in the series. It introduces the playable appearances of Hibiki Kohaku, Naoto Kurogane, Nine the Phantom, Saya/Hades Izanami, Mai Natsume, Susano’o, and Jubei.
