[Lab review] Oppo's new F7 phone will put a wide smile on selfie lovers

For the perfect selfie

WHO doesn’t do selfies or wefies nowadays?

Whether alone or with something nice or someone famous, the first thing most people do is... take a selfie or a wefie.

Some hardcore fans take these photos at every opportunity they get and if you are one of them, then you should check out Oppo’s latest phone, the F7.

Click #selfie on Instagram and you’ll find 344,441,821 postings, which explains why Oppo created a phone that focuses on selfies.

FEATURES
This 6.2-inch Android phone has a whopping 25MP front camera compared to just 16MP for the back shooter.

Oppo claims that the front camera gives higher range of details, luminance and colour levels when shot in bright sunlight or in the shade, similar to images taken with a good quality digital camera.

The front camera has seven features that will help fulfil every user’s selfie dream: beauty face feature powered by artificial intelligence (AI) engine, high dynamic range (HDR), depth effect (or bokeh), flash, super vivid mode, gesture mode, frame size — standard, square and full screen, and a variety of stickers to add fun and creativity to your selfies.

AI TECH
Oppo claims that its AI Beauty 2.0 technology scans 296 facial recognition points, which is a 20 per cent improvement from the first-generation technology, allowing for a more precise and accurate facial recognition capability.

What this technology does is gauge the person’s age, gender, skin colour and skin type to produce photos with greater detail.

How true is this? To be frank, it’s hard to tell how the AI calculates all the facial points but the selfie photos look very good, with lots of fine details.

Without applying the beauty filter, which has six levels but just the AI, I could see the detailed face. The 25MP sensor on the front camera can capture the details on a person’s face.

But if you want to cover up those pores or pimple scars, just apply the beauty filter, and wallah... your skin will be as smooth as that of a baby.

The AI also identifies your beautification preferences, based on the most common edits made to photo album images, and automatically creates similar adjustments to the new photos.

So the next time you take a selfie and want that perfect skin tone, exotic eye shape or other fun facial feature, F7 knows precisely what to do.

New features are also built into the F7, making it much more attractive and fun.

For example, the vivid mode gives users the opportunity to play with more colour saturation, enhancing the colour of clothes and backgrounds.

As for myself, the vivid mode is more useful when taking landscape photos or macro, as it brings out the colours of nature, especially under natural light.

Meanwhile, the availability of AR Stickers function allows users to have fun with selfies, adding cute animal or movie star like features, all ready for social media sharing.

I find this interesting as it makes selfies and wefies more interesting.

The gesture mode is also handy as you only need to raise your hand and the phone will trigger the three-second timer.

There is also a depth effect which users can apply for that bokeh or blur background effect to the photos, making the subject stand out.

BACK SHOOTER
The Oppo F7’s rear camera has a 16-megapixel sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, which manages to capture decent details in stills, provided there’s sufficient light.

Although it only has 16MP, I find it is more than enough to produce high quality and detailed photos.

The back camera can focus well and offers nice colours. Turn on the vivid mode and you’ll get more saturated photos with good contrast.

The phone shoots video but only up to 1080p resolution.

SCREEN
The F7 comes with an improved 2280 x 1080 resolution, 6.2-inch FHD+ Super Full Screen which gives a much more colourful, vivid and immersive visual experience.

It is also one of the first smartphones with a customised 19:9 aspect ratio, giving the user a larger area of effect for popular role-playing and strategy games.

It achieves this amazing visual feat by incorporating a notch, featuring the front camera, brand-new antenna and light sensor, neatly integrated into the screen.

The App-in-App allows the user to pick up an incoming call while continuing our gaming or when watching a movie.

The full screen multitasking on the F7 is the first in the industry that lets the user use gestures to navigate between apps.

FINISHING
The F7 sets new standards in precision and materials engineering, with every detail carefully considered by Oppo designers.

Users have a choice of different colours ― Solar Red, Moonlight Silver and the special Diamond Black edition.

The special edition 128GB model comes in Sunrise Red ―using a unique glass body that shimmers like gemstones, reflecting different colours with each glance from the user.

Under the hood is the latest 64-bit 4GB Octa-core processor, with a much-refined operating system.

Based on Android 8.1, ColorOS 5.0 has AI built into the software for better systems management. The ColorOS 5.0 AI power manager allocates processing power accordingly to the right app, making sure the phone runs optimally.

As such, F7 runs 80 per cent faster than its F5 predecessor when running multiple apps together. Additionally, it also allocates power usage appropriately, extending the average daily usage of battery life.

Available at RM1,399, with its features and solid build, this is a value buy. Using the Sticker function on Oppo F7.

Verdict: 4/5
