Riders put a smiling Beasley to bed in New Delhi

KUALA LUMPUR: National coach John Beasley is pleased with his riders' achievements at the ongoing Asian Cycling Championships (ACC) in New Delhi.

Fadhil Zonis, Umar Hasbullah and Ridwan Sahrom clocked 44.607s to clinch the men's elite team sprint silver at the Indira Gandhi Velodrome on Wednesday.

Japan won the gold with 44.367 while China clocked 44.036 to beat India's 44.451 for the bronze.

For the Malaysian trio, the silver medal bettered their bronze effort at the 2023 edition of the ACC in Nilai.

The women's team of Anis Amira Rosidi, Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri and Nurul Aliana Syafika Azizan won the team elite sprint silver.

They clocked 51.793 while China clinched the gold with 48.178. India picked up the bronze after South Korea were relegated in the bronze medal race.

The Malaysian women's team had also won the bronze in the 2023 ACC.

"Today was a great day one at the Asian championships in New Delhi, our elite women finished second behind China and the elite men won the silver medal beaten by Japan," posted Beasley on his Instagram page.

"Second behind two cycling powerhouses has put me to bed with a smile on my face, proud of both of them, also the team behind them, the team worked together wonderfully well, thank you team job well done."

The Malaysian team now have two silver and one gold from New Delhi.

Para cyclists Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin, Hafiz Jamali and Zuhairie Ahmad Tarmizi had earlier won the mixed para team sprint gold after posting 52.284 in the final to beat India who timed 1:02.661. Saudi Arabia settled for the bronze with 1:11.693.
