Ode to the bride

Wedding gowns this year pay homage to tradition while celebrating trends writes Meera Murugesan

EVERY bride dreams of finding that perfect dress, the one gown that will inspire awe, evoke tears of joy and allow her to walk down the aisle looking effortlessly beautiful.

Whether she wants a fitted mermaid style that flatters her figure, a soft, flowy ensemble that suits her garden wedding or a glamourous princess inspired ball gown, every bride deserves the dress of her dreams.

For the woman who will be a bride this year, choices abound from the top wedding designers in the country.

The bridal wear collections presented at The Wedding KL 2019 showcase last month saw a host of designs boasting luxurious fabrics, fine embellishments and modern silhouettes.

Many designers also married tradition with the needs of the fashion forward bride for gowns that drew attention and would certainly be the talk of the town.

Here are some of the collections making a statement this year:

BeYOUtiful by Armadale Weddings and Stardust by InZpire

Armadale Weddings has teamed up with its sister company InZpire for its latest bridal gown collection.

The BeYOUtiful collection is inspired by the saying “be your own kind of beautiful” and comprises intricately designed gowns in a blend of classic and contemporary.

Each gown has been carefully crafted to embody a modern voguish design, while keeping in mind functionality through the incorporation of pockets, detachable trains and removable off-shoulder pieces.

The Stardust collection is inspired by all things glam and glitter with an underlying European tone. It embraces the traditional European bridal ball gown design with a twist of InZpire’s modern and edgy style.

The collection features various shimmery embellishments such as Swarovski crystals, precious stones, sequins and sparkly fabrics.

Fine embroidered lace, mixes of nude and ivory, dotted tulle and chiffon silk and meticulous work ensure that every bride finds her gown, whether she’s looking for feminine and conservative or contemporary and adventurous.

Emcee Bridal

This fashion brand continues to push boundaries this year with new looks for practical modern brides. Principal designer Meichi Phoon has introduced fresh designs to the Infinity Wedding Gown series and gorgeous bespoke gowns that are both exquisite and practical to wear.

An Infinity Wedding Gown transforms seamlessly into multiple looks, perfect for contemporary brides who prefer versatility, elegance, comfort and practicality in one dress.

The bride has the flexibility to create many looks by picking a base gown of her choice to be paired with various toppers, overlays and underlays.

This seamless transformation from one look to another with just one gown allows every bride to shine in her own personality.

The collection also sees an injection of new colours for brides who wish to be different including the Deana, a nude-coloured strapless base gown which changes its look and colour to champagne or blush seamlessly with add-on toppers.

Trending colours in 2019 like sage and coral have also been used for brides who wish to move away from the usual reds and navys for evening wear.

Modern silhouettes also come into play with a bridal jumpsuit that can easily be used well beyond the wedding.

Statement Emcee Bridal creations this year also feature the designer’s signature detailing like charming botanical bead embroidery, as well as patch laces that make each dress unique.

Meichi’s signature cheongsam cut also sees a comeback this year with creative tailoring for that perfect fit.

Fiziwoo Artisanal Bridal 2019 Collection

A collection filled with wonder and intricacy, fusing traditional silhouettes with modern elements and vice versa.

As Fiziwoo is known for its sculptural silhouettes, the designers behind the house have retained this signature style, yet pushed boundaries by utilising soft tulle fabrics to construct silhouettes that are soft yet hard, romantic yet edgy.

The collection presents 17 dresses, each piece portraying a rich variety of couture techniques and a substantial amount of meticulous handwork such as “tambour” beadwork, hand pressed pleats and hand embroidery.

Exclusive fabrics such as Italian tulle, silk faille and French lace in ivory hues have been perfectly finished with beadwork using glass beads, sequins and Swarovski crystals, all of which lend an air of exclusivity to each bridal piece.

Liza Azulkarnain Spring/Summer 2019 Bespoke.

A total of 14 exclusive and elegant creations celebrate the season of spring, especially for the modern woman who wants to look glamourous and exclusive on her big day.

A romantic and effortless theme comes through in the graceful Victorian style cutting and three-dimensional adornments which add splendor to every piece.

Syomirizwa Gupta Brides 2019/2020

This collection takes us back to the designer's first dalliance with the theme of love and fashion. Here, he pays tribute to the marriage between old Hollywood glamour and the golden age of the Studio Jalan Ampas era of Malay films.

Think High Society, Giant, Roman Holiday, Father of the Bride, Madu Tiga, and Antara Dua Darjat and the graceful timelessness that defined actresses of that era such as Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn and Saadiah and Saloma.

Classic silhouettes and playful symmetrical lines have been reinterpreted to suit contemporary attitudes, resulting in designs which are both timeless and timely.

Soft delicate palettes such as whites, off-whites, champagne, rose gold, and dusty pink set the tone for this collection, and brides have no shortage of fabrics to choose from including lace, silk chiffon, duchess satin, and even batik.

Maqilla X Faizel Azraf Bridal Debut 2019

These combinations add warmth and charm to a collection which would flatter any bride.

Suffian Tugiman Bridal Collection 2019

Modern, sexy and eye-catching with elegant touches to impress the bride-to-be, this collection uses fabrics such as crepe, scuba and Thai silk to lend a luxurious touch to otherwise simple designs.

The charming veils which accompany these gowns add a further element of luxury to the ensembles which pay homage to the traditional bridal colour of white.

For the groom, suits in jacquard fabric with gold embroidery and floral motifs add a stand-out touch.
