HBO's festive special

This Hari Raya, HBO offers a Bahasa Malaysia version of animated hit film The Secret Life Of Pets

EVERY Hari Raya since 2012, HBO Asia has premiered a new Hollywood film, giving viewers the option to catch in Bahasa Malaysia with a dubbed version featuring the voice talents of regional celebrities.

Those aired include The Smurfs, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, Despicable Me 2, Transformers: Age Of Extinction and Jurassic World.

This year, HBO presents another family-friendly treat with the animated comedy, The Secret Life Of Pets.

It was last year’s fourth top grossing film in the US and features a delightful story on the lives pets lead when their owners leave for work or school every day.

In a building in Manhattan, terrier Max gets a sad awakening when his owner Katie takes in the stray dog Duke, whom he instantly dislikes.

The Bahasa Malaysia voice cast comprises various artistes from Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

Local stars Fahrin Ahmad, Nora Danish and Nabil Ahmad, as well as Singaporean actor Hisyam Hamid have all worked on previous HBO dub releases.

RETURNING VOICES

They made a return with The Secret Life Of Pets, voicing Duke (Fahrin), gutsy pomeranian and Max’s secret admirer Gidget (Nora), adorable yet deranged bunny Snowball (Nabil), and Max (Hisyam).

Fahrin had provided his voice on and Jurassic World.

“Luckily the animated films are comedies, so I got to have fun with my characters. Live-action films, on the other hand, are trickier. I had to accurately portray the characters’ emotions as well.

“Voicing for The Secret Life Of Pets was exceptionally memorable because Duke is a dog but I had to inject a bit of human quality into him through my vocal intonation,” said Fahrin.

Hisyam had lent his voice for Despicable Me 2, Transformers: Age Of Extinction and Jurassic World. Speaking on his character in The Secret Life Of Pets, Hisyam said Max is possessive towards his owner. “He loves Katie and Katie can only love him. No one else.

“When Duke enters the picture, his happy and peaceful life turns into hell,” he added.

This is Nora’s second time after the sci-fi action Jurassic World last year.

“There’s a different kind of satisfaction to it. An actor has to attempt various types of projects anyway,” said Nora.

She became a fan of animation films thanks to her son, Putra Rayqal. “Whatever he watched, I’d watch as well. That is how I developed this interest.”

She added that she had enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her pals in the industry while working on the dubbing.

Nabil, who had worked on Jurassic World and Transformers: Age Of Extinction, said voicing Snowball was an honour because it was voiced by renowned comedian-actor Kevin Hart in the original version.

“He’s so popular, so it’s only natural that I, who am also popular, would voice Snowball,” he said jokingly.

FITTING LIST OF TALENTS

Other local celebrities who contributed their voices were Sherry Alhadad (as Chloe), Juliana Evans (Katie), Shahrol Shiro (Buddy), Zarul Husin (Tiberius), Wafiy Aan (Ozone), Jamal Jamaluddin (Pops), Syazwan Zakariah (Derick), Akhmal Nazri (Mel), Syakirin Husnal (Maria) and Awang Hamyzan (Norman).

Filipino singer Mark Adam (Reginald) and Brunei deejay and fitness coach Nadzri Harif (Fernando) rounded up the set.

Astro English Language Business senior assistant vice president Junaidah Khan credited the effort of selecting these voice talents to Astro Productions.

“The team had successfully pinpointed which celebrity would be perfect for the characters in The Secret Life Of Pets. You’ll notice that their personalities even match,” she said at the film’s Press conference.

Sherry didn’t agree with the statement, saying that Chloe, a fat cat who can’t be bothered about anything unless it’s food, is nothing like her.

“First, we look nothing alike!” she joked in mock anger. “But then my friend kindly reminded me of the truth.”

Nevertheless, Sherry felt that while she is happy-go-lucky, Chloe has a snarky attitude.

“Furthermore, Chloe loves to eat, while I haven’t had rice for six years,” she added, still in a joking mood.

Akhmal, on the other hand, said his character Mel, a pug, is the “more hyper-active” version of his popular character Jibam in the educational series Oh My English.

Mark said he still couldn’t shake off Reginald’s arrogant personality from his system after voicing the character. “I hope I don’t hurt anyone’s feelings, and that this Hari Raya, I’ll be back to normal,” he joked.

TV host Syakirin and Nadzri respectively voice telenovela actors Maria and Fernando, who are also so over-the-top in real life.

While it was a challenge for Syakirin to sound exaggerated, it was a walk in the park for Nadzri who said his personality is similar to Fernando’s.

Meanwhile, as part of the movie premiere on HBO, the team behind the channel held a roadshow featuring some of the voice cast members at IOI City Mall in Puchong.

The celebrities and the HBO team also visited selected orphanages in Seremban to help with some spring-cleaning and to present grocery supplies.

The Secret Life Of Pets in Bahasa Malaysia, premieres on Sunday at 8pm on HBO (Astro Channel 411/431).
