#Showbiz: Bront Palarae needs RM2mil for Dawn Raid

KUALA LUMPUR: Actor-director Bront Palare is on a crowd-funding mission to raise RM2 million for his upcoming historical film Dawn Raid: The Hands That Rattled The Queen.

The owner of film production company Pixel Play has revealed that his Pitchin campaign began on June 18 and will end on July 31. He hopes to get Dawn Raid screened in conjunction with National Day next year.

“The new film costs RM4.4 million, but we only need RM2 million from fans. We’ve also applied for a loan from the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) and to date, we’ve collected RM6,747," he said in a news report today.

Bront, whose best known films include Ola Bola, Ombak Rindu and Terbaik Dari Langit said his company would soon launch special souvenirs for donors, and they included car stickers, bags, T-shirts and mugs.

They will also receive tickets to the film’s gala night on Aug 23 next year.

“Donations can be made from RM5 to RM250."

Dawn Raid tells the story of the 1981 “dawn raid” on the London Stock Exchange carried out by government-linked company Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, PNB chairman the late Tun Ismail Mohd Ali, and PNB chief executive officer Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim organised a major purchase of shares in British plantation company Guthrie which resulted in PNB gaining a majority share in the company in less than two hours.

“It’s an interesting and less-known historical event, but an inspiring one nevertheless. It tells Malaysians of the government’s efforts to ‘Malaysianise’ the national economy by bringing British companies into Malaysian hands,” said Bront.
