#Showbiz: Many successful people are depressed, says Sarimah Ibrahim

KUALA LUMPUR: Television host Sarimah Ibrahim reminds artistes and Netizens how depression is a serious matter which should never be taken lightly.

In an Instagram post today, she explained that many depressed people are "comedians, performers and the super successful”.

“They all look very happy, they are very skilled at hiding it, it’s not about how you look, it’s how you feel.

“Sadly, when it’s too late, then only the sadness is shown to others (by severe illness and addictions), which still doesn’t ‘look’ like depression.

“Only at the most severe point (death), everyone gets shocked as if the signs were not there all along.

“So, if someone asks for help before it’s too late, try to help them!”

Sarimah’s post came hot on the heels of young singer Haqiem Rusli’s announcement that he would seek medical help for depression and apologised to fellow artistes Ernie Zakri and Wany Hasrita whom he allegedly “humiliated” in a recent radio show.

He admitted that he had gone through bouts of “mild depression” and denied that it was a gimmick.

Netizens who viewed Sarimah’s post commended her for the explanation, complete with a diagram showing what was “inside” a depressed person.

Ravi said: “Thanks for the enlightenment. I think quite few people are in this situation but we are not aware.”

“We should practise awareness, lend a hand or ear to listen, give support. It takes time for depression to recover. Being with positive people is the most important thing,”said Russ.

Harman said: “People with depression know something is wrong but cannot pinpoint what it is. The late comedian Richard Jeni was in this situation.”
