#Showbiz: Kugiran Masdo a hit in China!

KUALA LUMPUR: Retro rockers Kugiran Masdo have been pleasantly surprised by China’s acceptance of them.

The Pop Yeh Yeh group led by singer Ali Sariah received a roaring applause from audiences at the Fishing Castle International Music Festival in Chongqing, China yesterday.

“We didn’t see this coming. Chinese music lovers may not understand Malay, but they loved our music and swayed to it,” said Ali in a news report today.

“Initially, we feared for the worst, that they wouldn’t be interested in our music at all. So this marks a very encouraging sign that Malaysian music is appreciated internationally, inspiring us to work harder and come up with better tunes.”

Kugiran Masdo has been in Chongqing and Hechuan, China since Oct 25, to perform on the invitation of the Ocean Institute of Audio Technology. Joining them is fellow Malaysian band Nadir.

“It’s always good for us to entertain music lovers outside the country. Going global pushes our standards of musicianship higher, and is the surest way to shine,” said Ali, adding that the group serenaded universities in both cities.

Kugiran Masdo’s next stop is Sri Pentas 2, Plaza Alam Sentral in Shah Alam on Nov 9. They will wow Malaysians with their single Bercanda Di Malam Indah at the the Muzik-Muzik 33 semi-finals.

Besides Ali, the group also comprises drummer Azham Ahmad, bassist Putu Ceri and guitarist Asmawi.
